Bitmark Inc., Senior Brand Designer, 2016-2018

Bitmark is a digital asset registry on the Bitmark blockchain lead by two US founders based in Taiwan. I was initially brought on as a consultant for the first phase of branding. During Phase 1, I established their positioning, did an audit of any available design systems, refreshed the existing logo for better proportion and lettering, and finally established branding and design guidelines. My contract was extended to Phase 2 for website, mobile, and web app design development, as well as cross-partnership branding, and finally Phase 3 for developing branded content both for internal marketing as well as partnerships and B2C.

Bitmark wanted to be established as a lifestyle brand, offering products that allow the building of wealth through the ownership of one’s data.

Phase 1:

In the first phase, after extensive internal research, interviews, and SWOT analysis, the company was positioned as ‘cleantech for the digital environment’ introducing the idea of registering our data in order to know what we own, in effect, cleaning up our digital detritus in order to see its value.

Phase 2:

In the second phase I addressed the challenges of introducing a new concept of personal data registry, let alone the understanding of how the blockchain plays a role. I developed a design direction based on the user experience of simplicity and transparency in all aspects of the company’s products. This started with the website, where being the first point of interaction the users had an immediate experience of data ownership and of value creation of a digital assets.

Phase 3:

In the final phase I addressed the ‘lifestyle’ aspect. I placed the focus on wealth generation through data ownership and how one can fund one’s dreams by actively participating in the data economy. I used stories of achievements that were made possible by large funds and aligned Bitmark as the platform that enables one to achieve dreams with our own wealth built within the Bitmark product ecosystem. I also established their blog with a content roadmap, in addition to contributing to it. And finally, I worked with the CEO to help establish his personal brand.

Significant achievement during my time at Bitmark:

Sometime in late 2016, during long after-hours conversations with the CEO, when he asked ‘how do we make people understand digital data as valuable assets?’, what we came up with was from my perspective as an artist: Create editioned work and register it on the Bitmark blockchain then create a way for artists to buy, sell, and trade their digital art assets. The Bitmark team created the precursor to what we now know as the NFT market. Many will attest that Bitmark was their first introduction to NFTs as we rolled out to our UCLA network. This also lead to the creation of totemic.co for buying/selling/trading of digital trading cards. The original Bitmark art auction site and totemic.co are now offline. Feral File is the new product (I was not involved in this product).
